The Bible reveals that God would have us carefully consider our values and priorities when it comes to what we do with our money and our time. The people of God know that their worth comes from God and not from money - not from money earned, hoarded, spent to purchase things, or used to exercise power. We are gifted with an abundance of skills and stories, with opportunities for love and service, and with one another. The people of God know that they have things money cannot buy; they know they are rich in things of the soul. Our congregation is to be a place where the abundant gifts of God become known and celebrated and shared. One of the important spiritual lessons we all need to be learning is how to be thrifty and generous.
Deuteronomy 8:18
"remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth."
I Timothy 6:17-19
"Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life."
Luke 12:15
"Then [Jesus] said to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."
